Curiosity Comes Before Commitment — and That's How Change Happens

By Dr Kelly Melnikova-Rhodes, Doctor of Chiropractic, MChiro (Chiropractor) · GCC: 04793 · 25 June 2026

My alarm went off at 3:30am last Sunday, and that’s the sort of time I’d rather not see on a clock.

But this wasn’t a normal morning. At 5am, surrounded by fellow swimmers and the first light of the Summer Solstice, I completed a 1km open water swim before 6am.

Even better, my husband joined me.

When Something That Once Felt Daunting Becomes Something You Share

A few months ago, swimming 1km felt like a huge challenge. Last week, I introduced one of my patients to open water swimming for the very first time. Something that once felt intimidating to me had become something I was encouraging someone else to try — and I was so proud of her for getting out of her comfort zone.

Progress Sneaks Up on You

What surprised me most wasn’t the distance. It was the recovery. A few weeks ago, a long swim would leave me feeling tired for days. Now I’m recovering faster, feeling stronger, and already planning a 1.5km swim.

Progress has a funny way of sneaking up on you. We often don’t notice how far we’ve come because we’re too busy looking at how far we still want to go.

Why Enthusiasm Spreads

What I love most about this experience is seeing how enthusiasm travels — not because anyone is dragged along, not because anyone is pressured, but because people become curious.

They see somebody enjoying something. They see somebody becoming healthier, happier, stronger, or more confident. And they start to wonder: could I do that too?

The Threshold Moment

Many worthwhile activities feel daunting at first.

Walking into a gym. Joining a class. Starting yoga. Learning to swim. Trying open water swimming. Even booking your first appointment with a healthcare professional — the unknown can feel intimidating.

But confidence rarely comes before action. More often, confidence follows action. You take the first step, and you discover you can do more than you thought. Then the next step becomes easier.

What This Means in Practice

As chiropractors, we see this every day. People often come to us because pain has limited what they feel able to do. Our goal isn’t simply to reduce discomfort — it’s to help people regain confidence in their bodies. To move more freely. To participate more fully in life. To return to activities they enjoy, or perhaps discover entirely new ones.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do isn’t to tell people what they should do. It’s to show them what’s possible. By improving your own health, embracing new challenges, and pursuing activities you enjoy, you may inspire those around you far more effectively than you realise.

Two Questions Worth Sitting With

So this week, think about two things:

What is something you’ve always wanted to try?

And who might you inspire if you gave it a go?

You never know where that first step might lead.
