But My Last Chiropractor Fixed Me in One Visit...

By Dr Kelly Melnikova-Rhodes, Doctor of Chiropractic, MChiro (Chiropractor) · GCC: 04793 · 16 May 2026

Today I want to talk about the chiropractic miracle. Well, it’s not actually a miracle.

”My Last Chiropractor Fixed Me in One Session!”

One conversation we have quite a lot in clinic, especially with new patients, goes something like this: “My last chiropractor or osteopath fixed me in one session!”

And firstly, genuinely, that’s great. If you’ve had a positive healthcare experience in the past, we celebrate that. Relief matters. Feeling better matters. Getting your life back matters.

But it’s also important to understand what happened in that moment, and what didn’t. Because there’s a difference between:

  • Symptom resolution, and
  • Changing the underlying patterns that led to the problem in the first place

These are two very different things.

Why Pain Doesn’t Always Match What’s Going On

Pain is fascinating, and sometimes wildly unpredictable. People can have significant structural changes on scans with very little pain, while others can experience intense pain with very little tissue damage at all. The nervous system is constantly interpreting, adapting, compensating and recalculating what’s happening in the body, which means symptoms can sometimes reduce very quickly. Let’s be honest, we all love it when that happens.

But that doesn’t always mean the body has fully rebuilt its capacity yet.

The Heat Shield and the Catalytic Converter

Think of it like taking your car to the garage because it’s making a funny metallic rattling noise. The mechanic says, “Ah, dead easy, it’s a loose heat shield, fifty quid,” and half an hour later it’s sorted. Bargain.

A year later, the car makes a similar noise. You think, “Heat shield again, fifty quid, job done.” But this time the mechanic says, “Ah… failing catalytic converter. Best part of a thousand pounds, and it’ll take most of the day.”

Same noise. Totally different outcome.

What We Actually Look At

So much can go on inside your body, and that’s why, alongside any adjustments, we talk about things like:

  • Movement quality
  • Posture and balance
  • Stress levels
  • Sleep and recovery
  • Breathing patterns
  • Muscular endurance
  • Lifestyle load
  • How adaptable your nervous system currently is

Because healing is rarely just one moment. More often, it’s a process of the body gradually reorganising itself over time.

You Do the Healing, Not Us

And this is the important part: you do the healing, not us.

No chiropractor, osteopath, physio, massage therapist, surgeon or practitioner “heals” your body for you. Your body is doing the heavy lifting every single day behind the scenes.

Our role is to help reduce interference, improve function, restore movement, calm protective patterns in the nervous system, and create an environment where your body has the best possible chance to adapt and recover well.

Quick, Gradual, or Somewhere In Between

Sometimes that process is quick. Sometimes it’s frustratingly gradual. Usually it’s somewhere in the middle.

But in our experience, the people who do best long term aren’t the ones chasing the fastest temporary fix. They’re the ones who build resilience, capacity, awareness and consistency over time.
